JOSHAWA
Growing up on the Big Island of Hawaii and attending high school in Oahu, I developed a strong connection to Hawaiian culture. Although I am of Chamorro descent (Guam), the Hawaiian islands deeply shaped my identity and instilled in me a profound appreciation for Polynesian culture.
Art has always been a constant in my life, beginning as a childhood hobby and evolving into a lifelong passion. My journey into tattooing began with my dad, who handed me a homemade tattoo machine and asked me to finish a Guam Seal he had started on his arm. With no prior experience, I practiced on oranges until I felt ready. That moment sparked a passion that has driven me ever since—Being able to travel throughout Polynesia all the while sharing the stories and beauty of Polynesian culture through every tattoo I create. At 18, I joined the Navy and eventually landed in San Diego, where I founded Island TAT, the first strictly Polynesian tattoo studio in the area. Island TAT began as a clothing brand in 2003, featuring Polynesian tattoo designs on apparel, and expanded to include Island TAT Tattoo Studio in 2007.
Over the years, I have been honored to tattoo Chiefs, Kings, athletes, celebrities, and collaborate with major companies like Disney. After 24 years in the industry, my inspiration continues to come from the clients who trust me to bring their stories to life through my art. I am deeply grateful to every client who has shared their journey with me and to Akua for the opportunity to preserve and share these stories through the markings on their skin.
