A full Polynesian sleeve is not a single-session tattoo. It is built over several sessions spread across months, with healing time between them. The time needed depends on your artist, placement, coverage, and design detail. After reviewing your project, we'll explain the estimated tattoo time, any separate design work, and how the sessions can be scheduled.
Session-by-session breakdown
The rhythm of a full sleeve at IslandTAT:
- Consultation: story, heritage and motif planning, and a review of the area.
- Freehand design + outline: the composition is drawn directly on your arm, then the primary elements are outlined.
- Fill + shading: motif fills, shark-teeth bands, enata detail.
- Background flow: wave fields, connective patterning, negative-space tuning.
- Polish: touch-ups and edge cleanup after healing.
How many appointments those stages take, and how long each appointment runs, depends on your artist, the coverage and the level of detail — your estimate lays that out before work begins.
How to space sessions
Skin needs to heal cleanly between sessions — coming back too soon risks muddying the pattern. Coming back later is fine; many clients spread work across many months. There's no penalty for pacing at your body's speed.
Faster is possible but not usually better
Some clients ask about back-to-back sessions in a single week — sometimes doable, more commonly avoided. Skin trauma compounds. A rested body takes ink better. If you're traveling in and have a hard deadline, talk to us during consultation and we'll plan around it.
Tattoo hours vs. appointment length vs. calendar time
These are three different numbers. Tattoo hours are the time the needle is working; appointment length includes breaks and the freehand drawing; calendar time is the span from first session to healed final piece, which for a full sleeve usually runs months because of healing between sessions.
