In-Person Work vs Remote Design
The best possible outcome for a Polynesian tattoo is always created in person. Most clients travel to San Diego to work directly with Joshawa Elsas, where designs are created freehand on the body to ensure perfect flow and placement.
Remote design is offered for clients who are unable to travel. While these designs are built with the same level of meaning and structure, they are created without direct body placement and will always be second to in-person work.
A note on cultural authenticity
Polynesian tattooing is one of the oldest and most sophisticated visual languages in human history. At IslandTAT, we do not sell templates, flash designs, or generic tribal patterns. Every design is a custom freehand composition that draws from the specific Pacific lineage connected to your story — whether that is a Polynesian tradition such as Samoan, Maori, Hawaiian, Marquesan or Tongan, or CHamoru from the Marianas.
We believe this tradition should be worn with understanding, not just aesthetics. That is why every design comes with a written Motif Meaning Guide explaining every symbol in your piece and what it represents.
This service is intended for people who cannot travel to San Diego. If you can make the trip, we strongly recommend the in-person experience.

Every design that leaves IslandTAT is a Tattoo-Ready Blueprint. That means the line weights are calibrated for tattooing. The negative space is intentional. The composition is mapped to the specific placement on your body. Any professional tattoo artist in your city can pick up this file and execute it with confidence.

Pricing below is a general starting point. After you submit your request, we'll follow up with the exact quote for your specific design, along with any questions we need to finalize it.
Standard Remote Design
Questionnaire-based process built from your story and direction.
- Small (under half sleeve): $500
- Half sleeve: $850
- Full sleeve: $1,200
Remote Design with Zoom Consultation
For a deeper design process, you can add a live Zoom consultation with Joshawa.
- 45–60 minute Zoom session
- Additional $400 fee

This option allows for a more refined outcome and deeper alignment with your story.
What this investment means
Small Design — $500
A single motif or small composition. This is the equivalent of commissioning a skilled illustrator for a full day of work, but with cultural knowledge built since 1999, a placement reference, and a Motif Meaning Guide included.
Half Sleeve — $850
A composition that covers the forearm or upper arm. This is a complete visual story, multiple motifs, intentional flow, and a design that works with the natural contours of your arm. A generic freelancer would charge 8 to 12 hours for this. The cultural accuracy and tattoo-readiness are not included in that price.
Full Sleeve — $1,200
A full arm composition from shoulder to wrist. This is one of the most visible pieces of art you will ever wear. Joshawa has designed full sleeves for professional athletes, military veterans, and cultural leaders. The design reflects your full story.
Zoom Consultation Add-On — $400
A 60-minute live session with Joshawa before the design begins. You discuss your story, your placement, your heritage, and your vision. This is the closest you can get to the in-person experience without being in San Diego. Highly recommended for full sleeves and complex pieces.

How Scheduling & Payment Works
There's nothing to pay when you submit your request. Once we reply with your finalized quote, we'll offer you the earliest available design appointment date. A $200 non-refundable deposit — applied toward your total price — holds that date on the schedule. Your design is completed on your scheduled appointment day, and we email your invoice for the remaining balance at the end of that day. Your final artwork is sent as soon as that invoice is paid.
