Joshawa Elsas is Chamorro, with roots in Guam, and was raised in Hawai‘i. He has been practicing tattoo since 1999, established the IslandTAT brand in 2003, and opened the San Diego studio in 2007.
His work is contemporary and research-informed — shaped by decades of field study, travel, and long-term relationships with people and communities across the Pacific.
He created the IslandTAT Method — a stencil-free approach where motifs are composed freehand directly on the body to reflect the client's own story, values, and milestones. He is also a published author and the host of TATtalk.

The Freehand Process. Unlike studios that rely on pre-made stencils or digital templates, our artists draw your design directly on your body. This freehand method allows the composition to follow your anatomy — muscle flow, bone structure, and natural movement — so the tattoo wraps and turns with you instead of fighting against your form. Freehand work cannot be copy-pasted from another client. It is how we build a body-flow Polynesian sleeve, chest panel, or back piece that follows the wearer rather than sitting on top of them.
Cultural Research. Our compositions are not built from internet image searches. They draw on long-term study, travel, and relationships across Samoa, Hawaii, Tonga, Aotearoa, the Marquesas, and Guam. Founder Joshawa Elsas has practiced tattooing since 1999 — which means the motifs chosen for your piece are selected deliberately, placed with structural intent, and discussed with you, including where a motif's meaning varies between traditions. We do not use sacred or restricted imagery decoratively, and we talk through what is appropriate for your story and heritage.
Research-Informed, Not Trend-Based. Trend-based tattooing chases what is popular this year — bold tribal looks pulled from Pinterest, repeated patterns, surface-level aesthetics. Research-informed work, by contrast, traces back to the original Polynesian design systems and applies them with structural integrity. The difference is permanence.
