How to Prep for Your First Polynesian Sleeve Session

    January 12, 2026 • 6 min read

The first session sets the tone for the whole sleeve. Prep well and you'll take ink cleanly, hold your body still longer, and heal faster. Here's the exact checklist.

    The 48 hours before

    • Sleep 7+ hours both nights.
    • No alcohol for 24 hours pre-session — it thins blood and pushes ink around.
    • Drink water. Aim for pale-yellow urine the morning of.
    • Moisturize the area daily but skip lotion the morning of the session.
    • Don't sunburn the area — no fresh burns on the canvas.

    The morning of

    • Eat a real meal 60–90 min before arrival — protein + complex carbs.
    • Skip caffeine or keep it light. Too much makes you jittery in the chair.
    • Shower and shave the area if instructed; otherwise the artist will shave.
    • Wear loose clothing that exposes the body area — tank top or sleeveless for arm work.
    • Bring headphones, a charged phone, snacks, and water.

What to expect at the studio

The freehand design is drawn on your body in marker before any needle work — this can take 30–90 minutes for a full sleeve outline. Give yourself a full day. Do not schedule anything else after. Ideal session length is 4–5 hours; some clients push to 6.

    What not to do

    • Don't take blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) the day of. Tylenol is fine.
    • Don't bring an entourage. One support person max.
    • Don't come hungover. Reschedule if you have to.
