Polynesian Tattoo Aftercare: A Day-by-Day Timeline

    January 15, 2026 • 8 min read

Polynesian pieces are dense, layered, and often large. Healing them well is what separates a piece that reads crisp forever from one that goes muddy inside a year. Follow this timeline.

    Hours 0–24: the fresh piece

    • Keep the studio's covering on for 2–24 hours depending on which product we used.
    • Once removed, wash gently with lukewarm water and unscented soap. Pat dry with paper towel.
    • Do not re-bandage unless we specifically instructed.
    • Expect plasma weep for the first 24 hours. Blot, do not wipe.

    Days 2–5: peak inflammation

    • Wash 2–3× per day. Pat dry.
    • Apply a paper-thin layer of unscented healing balm — Aquaphor, Hustle Butter, or similar.
    • Wear loose clothing. Do not soak the area.
    • Expect stiffness and mild bruising, especially near joints.

    Days 6–14: the itchy peel

The tattoo will peel like a sunburn. This is normal. Rules:

    • Do not pick. Do not scratch. Slap the area if you have to.
    • Switch from balm to unscented lotion once peeling starts.
    • Colors will look dull under the peel — this is temporary.

    Days 15–30: settling in

    • Continue moisturizing daily.
    • Still no sun exposure — cover the piece or use SPF 50 once fully healed.
    • Book your next session no sooner than day 30.

    Lifetime care

Sunlight is the primary threat to a healed Polynesian tattoo. Long-term, use SPF 50 on exposed pieces daily. A properly cared-for tattoo holds pattern integrity for decades. For touch-ups, contact us at /request-booking.
