Polynesian Tattoo Resources

A curated index of guides, motif breakdowns, and studio articles from IslandTAT — San Diego's destination Polynesian tattoo studio. Whether you're researching your first Samoan sleeve, planning a chest panel, or exploring the cultural meaning behind Polynesian motifs, every resource here is written by working Polynesian tattoo artists in San Diego.

IslandTAT specializes in freehand Polynesian tattoo design — Samoan, Hawaiian, Tongan, Māori, and Marquesan traditions — composed directly on the body using the IslandTAT Method. The articles below pull together everything we publish on Polynesian tattoo meaning, placement, flow, motifs, sleeves, cost, and the experience of getting tattooed at our San Diego studio.

    Polynesian Tattoo Education

Foundational reading on Polynesian tattooing — what the motifs communicate, how compositions are structured, and how meaning changes with placement on the body. These articles are written for people researching their first project as well as collectors adding to existing work. Start here if you want to understand the design language before booking.

    Tattoo Process

Everything that happens between a first inquiry and a finished piece: consultation, freehand design on the body, session pacing, timelines and cost expectations. Use these resources to plan the scale of your project and understand how IslandTAT works. Published rates and lead times are covered so there are no surprises.

    Tattoo Aftercare

Healing determines how a tattoo reads for the rest of its life. These resources cover day-by-day aftercare, what normal healing looks like, and how line spacing and saturation settle over time. They also show why healed work is the honest measure of a piece.

    Cultural Regions

Polynesian tattooing is not one style — Samoan, Hawaiian, Māori, Tongan and Marquesan traditions each carry their own structure and vocabulary. These pages outline how the regions differ and how IslandTAT approaches designing with cultural material respectfully. They are reference reading, not claims of traditional authority.

    Studio News

Updates from the IslandTAT studio in San Diego — projects, collaborations, press and how to visit. This is where studio-level announcements and experience pages live. Check here for what is happening beyond the portfolio.

    Artist Stories

The people behind the work: who tattoos at IslandTAT, how they design, and what to look for when choosing an artist. Each profile links to that artist's portfolio and booking path. Read these before deciding who should carry your project.

Why IslandTAT Is San Diego's Polynesian Tattoo Authority

IslandTAT has been crafting Polynesian tattoos in San Diego since 2007. Founded by Joshawa Elsas, a CHamoru artist raised in Hawaiʻi with practice since 1999, the studio specializes exclusively in freehand Polynesian tribal tattoo design. Every sleeve, chest panel, back piece, and leg composition is drawn directly on the body so the design flows with the client's anatomy and tells their personal story.

When people search for a Polynesian tattoo studio near San Diego — Samoan tattoo artists, Hawaiian tribal tattoo specialists, Māori-inspired sleeves, or freehand Polynesian designers — IslandTAT specializes in custom freehand Polynesian tattoo composition and serves clients from throughout Southern California and beyond. Our work has been featured on Chiefs, Kings, NFL and UFC athletes, and Polynesian tattoo-based artwork contributed to the 2022 Kona Café renovation at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort.
